Wakefield’s follow-up

With the Roma Web Fest approaching (september 26-29), screening episode 2 “Variation” in the foreign language category, it looks like the 2014 festival season is coming to an end. But what is happening around The Wakefield Variation? All the development claims seem to have vanished, and over one year and a half after the original pilot broadcast, nothing seems to have moved a slightly bit forward.

sat_remote3We know it’s the way it seems, but if you were just a little closer to us you’d know we’ve been working hard for this project… undercover, Wakefield’s style 🙂 Although we’re still far from seeing the outcome of our efforts, let’s say we spent the last couple of months thinking (and writing) about a broader context for The Wakefield Variation. Stay tuned!

Con il Roma Web Fest in arrivo (26-29 settembre), che avrà in concorso il secondo episodio, “Variation”, nella categoria lingua straniera, sembra che la stagione 2014 dei festival sia prossima alla fine. Ma cosa sta succedendo attorno a The Wakefield Variation? Tutti i proclami di sviluppo sembrano svaniti, e oltre un anno e mezzo dopo l’uscita del pilota originale, sembra che niente si sia mosso.

Sappiamo che è così che sembra, ma se foste appena un po’ più vicini a noi sapreste che stiamo lavorando duro a questo progetto…sottotraccia, nello stile di Wakefield 🙂 Sebbene il risultato dei nostri sforzi sia ancora lontano, diciamo che abbiamo passato l’ultimo paio di mesi a pensare (e a scrivere) un contesto più ampio per The Wakefield Variation. Restate sintonizzati!

The perfect number

Something needed to be done, as we could not watch The Wakefield Variation like that: you probably know that we’re talking about the project as a whole, not the single pilot episode, and you may also got a clue about we’re about to do… yes, we’re going to recut the pilot to three new (shorter) episodes, as a way to get a broader access to festivals, show the audience our serialized idea, and last but not least, save our (and partly your!) investment.

We set the youtube video to private – it will probably be back, someday – and deleted it from Blip.tv, too; we already started the editing process, and considering the non-linear narrative structure, it won’t be just splitting the edited material in three… it’s a true recut, hoping it will help some narrative, audience-catching elements to come out.

The three new episodes should be out soon, early january the latest, and they may feature something not seen or heard previously. Hope you didn’t run out of faith in us, stay tuned! 🙂

Qualcosa doveva essere fatto, dato che non ce la facevamo più a guardare The Wakefield Variation in quel modo: probabilmente sapete che stiamo parlando del progetto nella sua interezza e non del singolo episodio pilota, e dovreste aver intuito cosa stiamo per fare… sì, rimonteremo il pilota in 3 nuovi episodi (più corti), come modo per aver maggior accesso ai festival, mostrare al pubblico la nostra idea di serialità e, ultimo ma non ultimo, valorizzare il nostro (e parzialmente vostro!) investimento.

Il video su youtube adesso è privato – tornerà probabilmente, prima o poi – e l’abbiamo cancellato anche da Blip.tv; abbiamo già iniziato il montaggio, e considerando la struttura narrativa non-lineare, non si tratterà semplicemente di dividere in tre il montato originale… è un vero e proprio ri-montaggio, sperando serva a far venire fuori quanto necessario ad attrarre spettatori.

I tre nuovi episodi dovrebbero uscire a breve, non più tardi dei primi di gennaio, e potrebbero contenere qualcosa di mai visto o sentito in precedenza. Speriamo non abbiate esaurito la fiducia in noi, restate sintonizzati! 🙂

TWV - Come Nasce Una Spia - Kindle EditionEcco dopo tanto un post in italiano… anzi, solo in italiano! Questo perché il graphic novel che racconta l’antefatto di The Wakefield Variation è finalmente disponibile anche su Apple iBooks e Amazon… ma su quest’ultimo, solo in italiano, almeno per il momento.

In ogni caso ci è sembrato rilevante sottolineare che anche i possessori di dispositivi Apple (iPhone e iPad di qualunque misura e natura) e Kindle o compatibili (per chi non lo sapesse c’è un app Kindle anche per dispositivi Android) adesso possono leggere Come Nasce Una Spia… così come possono farlo tutti gli altri con la versione pdf, acquistabile ad esempio su Ultima Books.

Almost three months without a post: it never happened before, and we could understand if you thought our project was dead for good. We won’t lie, things are going slow, but it looks like it’s the way independent production is meant to be and we can assure you, The Wakefield Variation is in our minds, every single day! And now that One Look Behind is finally out, we hope you can say that as well (at least for the short time it will take you to read it ;)): yes, the long-awaited graphic novel prequel is available for purchase… check out our company site to learn more!

Quasi tre mesi senza un post: non era mai successo prima, e potremmo capire se aveste pensato che il nostro progetto fosse defunto una volta per tutte. Non mentiremo, le cose procedono a rilento, ma sembra che sia il modo in cui funzionano le produzioni indipendenti e possiamo assicurarvi che The Wakefield Variation è nei nostri pensieri ogni giorno!
E ora che Come Nasce Una Spia è finalmente uscito, speriamo possiate dire lo stesso (almeno per il poco tempo che vi ci vorrà per leggerlo ;)): sì, l’atteso fumetto-antefatto è disponibile per l’acquisto… date un’occhiata al sito di Effetto Espanso per i dettagli!

Oh, e cosa ne direste se queste piccolo assaggio desse vita ad una serie a fumetti a se stante? La leggereste? Fatecelo sapere! 🙂

Wakefield on NutralTV

While The Wakefield Variation is undergoing an intense development stage to actually beocome a series (you didn’t the project was dead after the pilot, did you?!) here is some interesting news: The web promoting platform Nutral TV is launching this week, and our beloved pilot is going to be featured in the very first episode! Be sure to check out their website on Wednesday, April 17th at 12 Eeastern Time (5pm in the UK, 18:00 italian time)!

Following the decision to recut the pilot into three new mini-webisodes, we deleted the original first episode on Blip.tv. It will probably be back as an extra, meanwhile we hope you will stay tuned to check out our new take on The Wakefield Variation!

We’re sure you don’t need words, but we can’t help spending a few: after all, it’s been over one year of struggling pre-production, 3 days of shooting in worst-possible wheather, and a month of post-production. All of that to deliver the following, and hopefully many more. If your internet connections allows it, we suggest you to watch it in HD, as we worked so hard to make it look as nice as possible 😉 Just click the gear button and select an HD resolution from the menu. Siamo sicuri che non avete bisogno di parole, ma non possiamo fare a meno di spenderne qualcuna: dopo tutto è stato un anno di faticosissima pre-produzione, 3 giorni di riprese col meteo peggiore possibile, e un mese di post. Tutto ciò per realizzare quello che segue, sperando di poter passare presto agli episodi successivi. Frist things first: the pilot episode of The Wakefield Variation is coming, it only needs a few finishing touches and then we’ll have our premiere 🙂
Meanwhile, what do you think of the graphic novel cover? We had mentioned it before, in press kits and maybe some old post… now it’s here: The Wakefield Variation – One Look Behind will tell a brief story from the past of our beloved title character, marking our debut in the transmedia universe. The comic book will be a 20 pages paper limited edition for Italy only, plus an international english version, digitally published. Artwork by Electric Sheep Comics. More details soon!

Prima di tutto: l’episodio pilota di The Wakefield Variation sta arrivando, ha bisogno solo di qualche ultimo ritocco e poi avremo la nostra “prima” 🙂
Nel frattempo, cosa ne pensate della copertina del graphic novel? Ne abbiamo parlato in passato, nelle cartelle stampa e in qualche post… ma ora è qui: The Wakefield Variation – One Look Behind racconterà una breve storia dal passato del nostro amato protagonista, sengnando il nostro debutto nell’universo transmediale. Il fumetto sarà un’edizione limitata cartacea di 20 pagine, solo per l’Italia, ed avrà anche una versione internazionale, in inglese, pubblicata digitalmente. Disegni a cura di Electric Sheep Comics. Happy New Year (again) and Why (part II)

This blog was started the first day of this very year, which is about to end (UTC+1 time zone!) and the second post was titled “Why” and dealt about the reasons of making a short film. There was also a “part one” in brackets, and one year later I feel the urge to drop a few lines about why this project has become a webseries, why it’s worth making it and why there’s nothing to watch yet.

A series is the only thing in independent film/video production that can have a market in these days, period. We can’t think of a feature, or a single short: being a company, investing a lot of what is still our own money, we have to think this way. I want to make clear that this is not something we regret or we’re ashamed of; considering how much television influenced the popular culture with great shows (even really bad ones, but that’s not what we’re talking about now) we’d be glad to be part of that arena.

Obviously, we must be aware of competing in a different league, but the web and all of its distribution opportunities are making possible something which was pure fantasy only a few years back. With the pilot episode of The Wakefield Variation we want to show the internet audience our take on independent webseries: an international blend of creative talent and professionals putting efforts into a small but ambitious project.

The French Connection

Unfortunately we didn’t get through the selection for the pitch at the Marseille Web Fest. It could have been a great opportunity to officially introduce our project to a bigger audience and potential investors but… we didn’t make it. Well, disappointment aside we decided to go there anyway, to take a look at other succesful webseries (including our story editor Jonathan Robbins’ Clutch) and see if we get to talk to someone who matters, regardless of the official pitch selection. Given our previous experience in pitching events (did we mention our past and shared present as documentary filmmakers?) we know it is possible 🙂 Oh, and since Jonathan will be there to get his LA Webfest jury award… expect to catch on video some live international (and otherwise unlikely) writing-team briefing! See you in Marseilles on Saturday, October 13th!

Sfortunatamente non siamo stati selezionati per il pitch (l’evento mercato) del Marseille Web Fest. Sarebbe stata una fantastica opportunità di presentare ufficialmente il nostro progetto ad un pubblico più vasto e a potenziali investitori ma… non ce l’abbiamo fatta. Bene, delusione a parte, abbiamo deciso di andarci lo stesso, per dare un’occhiata ad altre webserie di successo (compresa Clutch, del nostro story editor Jonathan Robbins) e cercare di parlare con qualcuno che conta, indipendentemente dalla selezione ufficiale. Data la nostra precedente esperienza ad eventi analoghi (vi abbiamo già detto di avere un passato e ogni tanto anche un presente come documentaristi?) sappiamo che è possibile 🙂 Oh, e siccome Jonathan sarà presente per ritirare il premio della giuria del LA Webfest…aspettatevi un video di una riunione internazionale (altrimenti improbabile) tra sceneggiatori! Ci vediamo sabato 13 ottobre a Marsiglia!
